Indigenous Voices: Taking the hymn 'UALAIUI' from the hymnal Let the Hills Sing as an example

The purpose of this study is to explore the transformation of Indigenous people’s traditional songs into hymns and the feelings of Indigenous Christians after listening to them through localized hymn recordings. Let the Hills Sing: Hymns of the tribal Christians in Taiwan is a music score published jointly in 1986 by the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan and the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music in the Philippines. It includes 25 hymns adapted from indigenous songs of six ethnic groups. The accompanying cassette tape allows us to understand how Indigenous churches performed these localized hymns at that time, making it valuable material for studying the localization of Christian music. One particular track on the cassette tape, "UALAIYOI" of the Paiwan, features recordings from two different singing groups, showcasing two distinct interpretations of the same hymn, a rarity in record publishing.

This study adopts Nina Sun Eidsheim's perspective from 2019, which views sound as cultural and collective. Therefore, it attempts to understand the cultural background of the hymnal and the traditional characteristics of the Indigenous songs through interviews, historical documents, music scores, and field recordings. Additionally, it references Nicholas Harkness's approach to studying sound from 2013. By playing the two different versions of "UALAIYOI" from the cassette tape to church members of Paiwan, the study aims to understand their perceptions and the meanings different singing styles represent to listeners. The preliminary research shows that for Paiwan people, the singing style of elders tends to lean towards "traditional" and evokes a natural sense of emotion, stirring up shared memories of life together. This study combines historical recordings to witness the localization of hymns, aiming to contribute to an understanding of the evolution in Indigenous music within churches over time.

原住民之聲:以聖詩集《群山歡唱》中的”UALAIUI”為例

本文目的在於藉由在地化的聖詩錄音探討傳統古謠改編成聖詩後的樣貌,以及原住民基督徒聆聽後的感受。《群山歡唱:台灣山地基督徒聖詩》是1986年由台灣基督長老教會和位於菲律賓的亞洲聖儀學院聯合出版的樂譜,當中收錄六個民族共25首以原住民歌謠改編成的聖詩曲目,且所附帶發行的錄音帶能讓我們了解當時的原住民教會如何演唱此種在地化的曲目,是研究基督教音樂在地化很好的素材。而錄音帶中的排灣族曲目UALAIYOI剛好收錄兩種演唱團體的錄音,呈現出同一曲目的兩種不同唱法,這在唱片出版中是相當罕見的事。

本研究採用Nina Sun Eidsheim於2019的看法,認為聲音是文化的、集體的,因此嘗試透過訪談、歷史文獻、樂譜、傳統古謠的田野錄音來了解該聖詩集的文化背景與古謠的傳統樣貌之外,並參考Nicholas Harkness於2013年研究聲音的方法,播放此錄音帶中UALAIYOI的兩種不同演唱版本給本族人士聆聽,了解聽者的感受與不同演唱方式對聆聽者所代表的意義。本研究結合歷史錄音來見證聖詩的本土化樣貌,期待能有助於了解原住民音樂在教會中的變遷。
